Show Me/Tell me

These are two questions that the driving examiner will ask you at the start of the practical test. There are 19 questions at present; you will be asked two out of the19. You cannot fail for not answering both question but will be given 1 minor driving fault.

Q1.Show me how you open the bonnet.  How you would check the engine coolant level?

ANS.Identify the coolant reservoir and check the max/min levels.

Q2.Show me how you open the bonnet. How would you check the brake fluid level?

ANS.Identify the brake fluid reservoir check the min/max levels.

Q3.Show me/explain how you would check that your power steering is working before start of a journey.

ANS. There are two simple checks; gently pressure on the steering wheel as you start the engine, you should feel a noticeable movement on the steering wheel, or turn the steering once engine is on it should turn easy.

Q4.Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working.

ANS. Turn on the ignition, push the brake pedal look for reflections or get someone to help.(Don’t start the engine),

Q5. Show me how you open the bonnet, how would you check the engine oil level and know if the level is correct.

ANS.Identify the dipstick pull it out, wipe it, put it back in, pull out and check the level by the min/max marks.

Q6. Show me how you would check to see if the horn is working.

ANS.Press the horn and listen, you may need the ignition on, (Don’t start the engine)

Q7.Show me how you would switch on the REAR FOG lights; explain when you need to use them.

ANS. Switch on the ignition turn on the dipped head lights then the REAR FOG   light switch, check for the warning light. Use when vision is less than 100 meters.

Q8.Show me how you open the bonnet, how would you check your screen washer level?

ANS. Identify the screen washer reservoir and check the min/max levels or open the cap look inside.

Q9. Tell me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working.

ANS. Turn on the ignition, turn the lights on and walk around the vehicle (Don’t start the engine)

Q10.Tell me where you would find the recommended tyre pressure for this vehicle, how you would check the pressures.

ANS. Look in the manufacturers handbook and use a reliable pressure gauge, check when the tyres are cold, also the spare wheel.

Q11. Tell me how would know if the tyres have sufficient tread depth and their general condition.

ANS. No cuts or bulges, minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central 3/4s of the breath of the tyre and the entire circumference.

Q12.Show me how you would set the heater controls to demist the screen and other windows effectively, also the rear screen.

ANS. Set the heater controls and fan

Q13.Show me how you switch on your dipped headlights to main beam, how would you know the dip to main beam.

ANS. Switch on the ignition, turn on the dip lights, and turn on the main beam, look for the warning light on the dash (BLUE) – (Don’t start the engine),

Q14.Tell me how you would know if your head restraint is correctly adjusted, and provides best protection in the event of an accident.

ANS. Head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least in line with the top of the ears, and close to the back of your head.

Q15. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your ABS anti-locking brake system.

ANS.A warning light would show up on the dash panel.

Q16.Tell me how you would check that your brakes are working before start of a journey.

ANS. Press the brake pedal down, it should not feel soft or spongy or travel to the floor, or pull to one side.

Q17.Show me how you would check the parking brake and has not excessive wear.

ANS. Apply the hand brake (parking brake), when fully applied it should secure itself.

Q18. Show me how you would check your direction indicators are working correctly.

ANS. Press the hazard light switch and walk around the car checking all four corners a

Q19:Show me how you can check the handbrake (parking brake) for excessive wear.

ANS:  Press the foot brake, release the handbrake, re-apply the handbrake and the handbrake shouldn’t come up too high and the car shouldn’t move when you release the foot brake.
